SUPER-NET
selects Sandvine to help build self-defending network
[June 23, 2004]
MASSILLON, OH, and WATERLOO, ON, Jun
23, 2004 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Sandvine Incorporated
today announced that SUPER-NET, the Internet subsidiary
of Massillon Cable TV, has selected Sandvine Worm and
Denial-of-Service Traffic Mitigation to improve the
subscriber experience on its 10,000 homes-passed network.
Worm outbreaks and their associated
denial-of-service (DoS) attacks can consume as much
as 60 per cent of available bandwidth on a service provider
network in a matter of hours. But even discounting the
impact of "event-level" attacks by superworms
like MyDoom and Netsky, research has shown that malicious
traffic caused by remnants of old attacks accounts for
between 4- and 12-per-cent of all the data moving across
broadband networks on any given day.
Combined, sundry and event-level worm
attacks pose significant business challenges to service
providers. SUPER-NET has elected to deploy Sandvine's
multi-layer Worm/DoS solution to create a self-defending
network capable of defeating worms at each point in
their five stage lifecycle, protecting the subscriber
experience while controlling the network and customer
support costs worms create.
"As the number of high-speed connections
grows, so does the effective range and destructive power
of Internet worms and DoS attacks," said David
Hoffer, CFO and General Manager of SUPER-NET. "Sandvine's
approach allows us to mitigate malicious traffic from
a central point in the network to protect and maximize
the quality of our subscribers' online experience."
